How to Make a Magic Ring
A magic ring — also known as a magic circle or magic loop — is a method for beginning your crochet with a tightly closed center. It's especially valuable for amigurumi, since it gets rid of the little hole that tends to show up when you start from a chain loop instead.
Step 1. Wrap the yarn around your little finger, carry it over to your index finger and around it, then wrap it around your middle finger and stop. Take that loop sitting on your middle finger, bring it into your palm, and pinch it between your middle finger and thumb to hold it steady.
Step 2. You're now in crocheting position, ready for the first stitch in the magic ring. Insert the hook and draw up a loop. In that loop, work 1 chain to lock it in place.
Step 3. With that first secure loop on the ring, insert the hook into the ring again, yarn over, and pull up another loop — you'll now have 2 loops on the hook. With both loops on the hook, yarn over and pull the yarn through both of them.
And there's your first stitch on the magic ring! You should be left with just one loop on the hook.
For the second stitch on the ring, insert the hook and pull up a loop first. That puts 2 loops back on the hook, so yarn over again and pull the yarn through both. Now you've got 2 stitches on the magic ring.
Keep working the number of stitches your pattern calls for directly into the ring, crocheting over both the loop and the yarn tail as you go. Once all the stitches are in, it's time to close the ring: pull the yarn tail firmly to draw the center hole shut. You may have to tug harder than you'd expect.
Then carry on with the next round as usual. To begin a new row, work a stitch into the first stitch sitting to the left of your hook. That becomes the first stitch of the row, and it helps to drop in a stitch marker there for reference.
It can feel a little fiddly the first few times, but once it clicks, the magic ring becomes one of the most useful techniques in all of crochet — giving your projects a much cleaner, more polished starting point.
